For the purpose of this story, we focus on rock songs since 1960s till 2010s.
1960s Song: Whole lotta love Artist: Led Zeppelin Album: Led Zeppelin II
Probably by the name, not a song you'd expect in the top rock songs, but the amazing riff by Jimmy Page just blows your mind! The song was the intro for Led Zep's second studio album but was also released as a single in a lot of countries. The song went on to sit at the 4th spot on the Billboard Charts of Top 100 song. This song has left behind a legacy and was ranked 75th on Rolling Stones Magazine's list of 500 Greatest song of all time. Also, VH1 ranked it 3rd greatest hard rock song of all time.
1970s Song: We will Rock you Artist: Queen Album: News of the world
Let me just say that for this decade we had the toughest time! Honorable Mentions: Stairway to Heaven by Led Zeppelin, Bohemian Rhapsody by Queen, Highway to hell by ACDC Wondering which song could beat these masterpieces, well let's get into it straight away.
If there's one song that gets everybody chanting at top of their lungs, it's this one. With numerous covers out there, queen and Freddie Mercury still have a separate impact. In 2001, it was ranked at 146 in the songs of the century list. In 2009, We will Rock you was inducted in the Grammy's Hall of Fame. This song is also considered as the sports anthem for probably every sport!
1980s Song: Sweet Child O' Mine Artist: Guns N' Roses Album: Appetite for Destruction
Before beginning, would like to highlight some honorable mentions! Honorable Mentions: With or without You by U2, Summer of 69 by Bryan Adams, Fade to Black by Metallica, Back in Black by ACDC Now, let's jump in.
There has to be a Guns N' Roses song in every rock list, #mandatory. This song was their masterpiece, but did you know the guitar solo slash does was recorded as a joke and the band actually thought this song will be nothing. But eventually, it went on to the number 1 spot on Billboards Hot 100 chart. The lyrics were based on, that time Axl Rose's Girlfriend Erin Everly. This song was placed at number 1 by Kerrang! in their list of 100 greatest riffs. With so many legendary artists releasing and performing their versions of this track, that speaks at lengths about the legacy of this song.
1990s Song: Smells Like Teen Spirit Artist: Nirvana Album: Nevermind
The golden period for the grunge genre of rock music! A whole new wave of artists came across during this decade. Some Honorable Mentions: Enter Sandman by Metallica, Black Hole Sun by Soundgarden, Creep by Radiohead, Wonderwall by Oasis
The most talked about Nirvana Song, the song for Gen-X, the song which is considered the entry point of grunge into mainstream. Smells Like Teen Spirit was so popular, it was included in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame's list of Songs that Shaped Rock and Roll. In 2002, NME ranked it at number 2 on the list of 100 Greatest Singles of all Time, while Kerrang! gave the number 1 spot to it. In 2017, it was inducted in the Grammy Hall of Fame.
2000s Song: In the End Artist: Linkin Park Album: Hybrid Theory
The era of Nu Metal, rap rock! Probably the most experimental stage of rock music. Honorable Mentions: Bring me to life by Evanescence, Chop Suey! by System of a Down, Boulevard of Broken Dreams by Green Day, Numb by Linkin Park.
To some extent, it is pointless to debate about the 2000s, that was LP's time and there was no other band which was even near to their reach in the Rock community. Inspired by a mix of artits like Metallica and Rakim, LP is probably the best rap rock band ever! In the End, as a song is not just a song, it's an anthem. 1 out of every 3rd person I have met, has admitted to In the End being their first english song. This song was named Billboard's second most played rock song of the decade and also reached the top ten list in numerous worldwide music charts. But the fun fact, Chester Bennington did not like the song initially and never wanted it to be a part of their album!
2010s Song: Radioactive Artist: Imagine Dragons Album: Night Visions
An era which saw a lot of electronic advancements. Many legendary rock bands were left behind in this era of electronic music but still we as listeners were blessed with some great music during this decade. Honorable Mentions: Burn it down by Linkin Park, The Sound of Silence by Disturbed, Demons by Imagine Dragons.
This song was a sleeper hit, peaked at number 3 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. Also, holds the record for most weeks spent on the Billboard Hot 100 at 87 weeks. Imagine Dragons also went on to receive the Best Rock Performance Grammy Award. With a mix of Dubstep and Dan Reynolds voice, this song hits differently when you're in a group!
