Europe Travel Series

Join me on an unforgettable journey through Europe as I explore its most iconic cities, hidden gems, and breathtaking landscapes.

During our Euro trip, my friends and I decided to take a spontaneous night trip to Amsterdam from Den Haag. With only a few hours to explore this iconic city, we boarded a train at Den Haag Station, we had our tickets in hand and excitement in the air. After a short journey, we arrived at Amsterdam Central Station, stepping out into the city's cool, night-lit streets, eager to make the most of our limited time.

We were pleasantly surprised by how comfortable and peaceful our train journey was! We were so excited to finally explore all the places we had heard so much about. The anticipation was building as we chatted and laughed, imagining all the adventures that awaited us. Being on this adventure with my friends was such a thrill, and we couldn't wait to make unforgettable memories together.

For only 11 euros, we hopped on a train from our cozy Holiday Inn in Den Haag to the bustling Amsterdam Centraal. It's crazy how a simple train ticket can hold so many memories of our unforgettable trip to Amsterdam. I decided to keep it as a souvenir always to remind me of our amazing adventures in the city. It just goes to show that sometimes, the smallest things can hold the biggest memories.

First Stop: Basilica of Saint Nicholas

Our first stop was the stunning Basilica of Saint Nicholas, a grand Catholic church located near the station. Built in 1887, the basilica is one of Amsterdam’s most notable religious landmarks, named after Saint Nicholas, the patron saint of sailors. Its Neo-Baroque and Neo-Renaissance architecture, complete with twin towers and a large dome, made it hard to miss. Inside, we marveled at the intricate stained glass windows and rich artwork, giving us a moment to pause and appreciate the history and craftsmanship behind this beautiful church.

We got to know that, Saint Nicholas is also known as Sinterklaas in Dutch tradition, the figure who inspired the modern-day Santa Claus!

Park Plaza Victoria Amsterdam: A Marvel of Architecture

As we continued wandering through the streets, one building caught our eyes—the Park Plaza Victoria Amsterdam. Located directly across from Central Station, this hotel is a beautiful blend of historical charm and modern luxury. The hotel’s facade, with its towering architecture and intricate design, is a visual treat. Opened in 1890, it has housed many famous guests over the decades. We didn't have time to go inside, but just standing outside and admiring the architecture was enough to leave us in awe.

Park Plaza Victoria enjoys one of the best spots in Amsterdam. Situated right in front of Amsterdam Central Station, the hotel serves as the perfect base for exploring the city. Whether you're planning to wander through the famous canals, visit the nearby Dam Square, or explore the bustling shops and cafes of the city center, everything is just a short walk or bike ride away.

For those looking to experience the city's rich cultural heritage, the hotel is also within easy walking distance of some of Amsterdam's most famous landmarks, including the Anne Frank House, the Rijksmuseum, and the Van Gogh Museum. With its central location, guests can immerse themselves in the vibrant atmosphere of Amsterdam while enjoying the convenience of being right in the heart of the city.

Old Amsterdam Cheese Store: A Cheese Lover's Paradise

Our next stop was the Old Amsterdam Cheese Store, a must-visit for cheese lovers. As soon as we stepped in, the smell of rich, aged Dutch cheese filled the air. We sampled some of their famous cheeses, including their flagship "Old Amsterdam" cheese, a hard, flavorful Gouda that's been matured to perfection. We learned that the store’s cheese-making process follows traditional recipes, passed down through generations, ensuring that each bite is a taste of Dutch heritage.

De Bijenkorf Flagship Store: Shopping at Its Finest

From there, we wandered into Amsterdam's retail hub, passing De Bijenkorf, a high-end department store that’s a staple in the city. As the flagship store, De Bijenkorf (which means "The Beehive") is known for its luxurious shopping experience, offering top-notch brands like Gucci, Louis Vuitton, and Burberry. Even though we didn't do much shopping, it was fascinating to explore the dazzling displays and feel the vibrant energy of this high-end shopping mecca.

De Bijenkorf is over 150 years old, starting out as a small haberdashery and growing into the luxury department store it is today.

Oude Kerk: Amsterdam’s Oldest Building with a Twist

Our next stop was Oude Kerk, Amsterdam’s oldest building and now an art museum. Dating back to 1306, this church-turned-gallery hosts contemporary art exhibitions that contrast sharply with its Gothic-style architecture. While walking through the space, we were struck by the juxtaposition of modern art against the backdrop of ancient stained glass windows, wooden ceilings, and centuries-old gravestones.

Oude Kerk

As I wandered through the ancient Oude Kerk in Amsterdam, I was taken aback by the sight of tombstones lining the floors, transforming the church into the city's largest medieval cemetery. Among the countless graves, I discovered the final resting place of none other than Rembrandt's beloved wife, Saskia. The history and stories held within these hallowed walls left me in awe, reminding me of the rich and often surprising past that lies hidden beneath the surface of the bustling city streets.

Dam Square: The Heart of Amsterdam

After exploring the art at Oude Kerk, we took a breather at Dam Square, the bustling center of Amsterdam. Surrounded by iconic landmarks like the Royal Palace and the National Monument, this square is always alive with street performers, tourists, and locals. The lively atmosphere was infectious, and we soaked it all in, watching people from all walks of life gather and interact. From Dam Square, it was just a short walk to the famous Red Light District.

Dam Square Amsterdam

If you find yourself in Amsterdam, you simply can't miss Dam Square, the historic heart of the city. Dating back to the 13th century, this square was originally built as a dam to protect against flooding, hence its name. Today, it's a bustling hub of activity where history and modern life collide. The Royal Palace, with its impressive facade and rich history, stands prominently on the square. Once a city hall during the Golden Age, it now serves as a royal residence and a fascinating place to explore. Additionally, the National Monument, a towering obelisk, stands as a poignant tribute to those who lost their lives during World War II. It's a solemn reminder of the resilience and unity of the Dutch people. Every year on May 4th, a ceremony is held here to honor the sacrifices made. Dam Square truly encapsulates the essence of Amsterdam, with its blend of history, culture, and remembrance all in one vibrant space.

The Red Light District: A First for Us

As an Indian experiencing the Red Light District for the first time, I must admit it was a culture shock. Known for its adult entertainment, including strip shows and peep shows, the district offers a look into a side of Amsterdam that many people hear about but don’t truly understand until they see it in person. As we wandered the streets with neon-lit windows and bold advertisements, my friends and I found ourselves wide-eyed, discussing how unique and different it was compared to anything we’d seen before.

Personally, it was something I’d never experienced, but I could see how it was an integral part of Amsterdam’s identity. It was an eye-opening experience, to say the least, and while the area has a somewhat wild reputation, it also showcases Amsterdam's liberal attitude toward personal freedom.

The Bulldog Café: A Sweet Ending to the Night

After a whirlwind tour of Amsterdam's sights, we decided to wind down at the famous Bulldog Café. This legendary coffee shop is known for its laid-back atmosphere, and after all the walking, we settled in and indulged in their special brownies. While we were skeptical at first, let's just say that the brownies delivered exactly the "happy ending" we had hoped for! It was the perfect way to relax and reflect on our spontaneous adventure through Amsterdam.

Conclusion: A Memorable Night in Amsterdam

Our visit to Amsterdam may have been short, but it was definitely sweet. The city's unique blend of history, art, and culture had us captivated from the moment we arrived. We were in awe of the stunning Basilica of Saint Nicholas, amazed by the modern art at Oude Kerk, and energized by the bustling atmosphere of Dam Square.
